Cerebrum- White Matter (2) Flashcards
Where do white matter fibers convey signals from?
Cortex
What is the cerebral cortex?
Gray matter on surface of hemispheres
What are granule cells?
Small interneurons within cortex
What are pyramidal cells?
Output cells for cerebral cortex (projection, commissural, and association fibers)
What is the function of brodmanns area?
Cortical mapping and are useful for designating specific locations in the cortex
What does the primary sensory cortex receive information from?
Peripheral afferent/dorsal column neuron
Medial lemniscus neuron
Thalamocortical neuron
Where does the primary auditory cortices receive info from?
Both cochlea
What is the function of the primary auditory cortices?
Conscious discrimination of loudness and pitch of sounds
Where does the primary vestibular cortices receive info from?
Vestibulothalamocortical pathway
What is the function of the primary vestibular cortices?
Discriminates among head positions and head movements (contributes to perception of vertical)
What is the pathway of the primary visual cortex?
Retina to lateral geniculate to primary visual cortex
What is the function of the primary visual cortex?
Distinguishes intensity of light, shape, size, and location of objects
What is the function of the secondary somatosensory?
Sterogenesis and memory of tactile and spatial environment
What is the function of the secondary visual?
Analysis of motion, color, recognition, and visual fixation
What is the function of secondary auditory?
Classification of sounds
What does a lesion to the secondary somatosensory lead to?
Astereogenesis (cannot determine what an object is with touch)
What does a lesion to the secondary visual lead to?
Visual agnosia (unable to recognize with vision)
What does a lesion to the secondary auditory lead to?
Auditory agnosia (unable to recognize sounds)
What is the function of the supplementary motor area?
Initiation of movement, orientation planning, and sequential movements
What is the function of the premotor area?
Control of trunk and girdle muscles (anticipatory postural movements)
