Musculoskeletal Receptors Flashcards
What is a muscle spindle composed of?
Muscle fibers, sensory endings, and motor endings
What are both ends of a fusiform?
Tapered
Extrafusal
Skeletal muscle fibers outside the spindle
Intrafusal
Fibers inside the spindle
What do muscle spindles respond to?
Stretch
What do type 1a afferents do?
Register quick tonic stretch of muscle spindle
What do type 2 afferents do?
Monitor tonic stretch (no velocity)
What do joint receptors respond to?
Deformation of joint capsule and ligaments
What do paciniform corpuscles respond to?
Movement (type 2 afferent)
What do ruffinis endings respond to?
Passive movement and extremes of joint range (type 2 afferents)
What do ligament receptors respond to?
Signal tension (type Ib afferents)
What are free nerve endings stimulated by?
Inflammation (type 3 and 4)
Golgi tendon organ
Signal the force generated by the muscle contraction or by a passive stretch of the tendon
