Solids, Liquids, and Gases - Solids Flashcards

1
Q

liquids to solids

A
  • cooling of liquid eventually slows molecular motion down to the point where liquid is transformed into a solid
  • freezing point = melting point
  • liquid –> solid = solid –> liquid

Q

properties of solids

A
  • particles are held in a fixed arrangement by the attractive forces (unlike liquids)
  • highly regular repeating pattern of particles are known as crystalline solids
  • crystal lattice: three dimensional arrangement of particles
  • heat of fusion - heat required to convert 1g of a solid to a liquid at the melting point
  • sublimation - solid –> gas
