Solids, Liquids, and Gases - Solids Flashcards
1
Q
liquids to solids
A
- cooling of liquid eventually slows molecular motion down to the point where liquid is transformed into a solid
- freezing point = melting point
- liquid –> solid = solid –> liquid
2
Q
properties of solids
A
- particles are held in a fixed arrangement by the attractive forces (unlike liquids)
- highly regular repeating pattern of particles are known as crystalline solids
- crystal lattice: three dimensional arrangement of particles
- heat of fusion - heat required to convert 1g of a solid to a liquid at the melting point
- sublimation - solid –> gas
