Chemical Bonding - Covalent Non-Metals: Lewis Structure - Covalent Compound Flashcards
1
Q
steps for drawing lewis structures
A
- least electromotive atom is in center
- hydrogen cannot be central atom
- determine shared electrons and number of bonds (shared=need-available, S=N-A)
- arrange remainder of electrons to fill octets
2
Q
HCl
A
- hydrogen has 1e- needs 2
- chlorine has 7e- needs 8
- S = N-A
= S = 10-8 - S= 2/2 = 1 bond
3
Q
NF3
A
- flourines have 7e- x3 = 21 needs 8 x 3 = 24
- nitrogen has 5e- needs 8
- S=N-A
- S= 32-26
S = 6/2 = 3 bonds
