Chemical Bonding - Ions and Metals: Names of Ions and Ionic Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
nomenclature naming rules
A
- ionic compounds: cation and anion
- cations are named exactly the same as the metal they came from
- simple monoactomic anions are named by adding the suffix -ide to root names from nonmetals
2
Q
naming examples
A
- Nal - iondine - sodium iodide
- K_2S - ptoassium sulfide
- MgS - magnesium sulfide
- HCl - hydrogen chloride
- Ca_2C - calbium carbide
- SrO - strontium oxide
3
Q
naming oxyanions of nitrogen and sulfur
A
- SO_3^2- - sulfite
- NO_2^- - nitrate
- SO_4^2- - sulfate
- NO_3^- - nitrate
- in each case the N or S with fewer atoms of oxygen has the ending -ite
4
Q
naming of Oxyanions of CHlorine
A
- CIO^- - hypochlorite
- CIO_2 ^- - chlorite
- CIO_3^- chlorate
- CIO_4^- perchlorate
- BrO_3^- = bromate
- IO_3^- = periodate
5
Q
polyatomic ions in compounds
A
- if more than one polyatomic ion required it is grouped with parenthesis and number indicated with a subscript
- MG^2+ + )H^- –> Mg(OH)_2
- NH_4^+ + PO_4^3- –> (NH_4)_3 PO_4
- CA^2+ + NO_3^- –> CA(NO_3)_2
6
Q
polyatomic naming examples
A
- NA_2SO_4 - sodium sulfate
- NH_4Cl - ammonium chloride
- Ba_3(PO_4)_2 - barium phosphate
7
Q
common and systematic for transition metals
A
- ous - lower oxidation state
- cuprous - Cu(I)
- ferrous - Fe(II)
- ic - higher oxidation state
- cupric - Cu(II)
- ferric - Fe(III)
