WHAT IS SODIUM VALPROATE USED FOR?
epilepsy, migraines, mania
unlicensed: migraine prophylaxis
dose in renal impairment?
reduce
directions for IV administration of sodium valproate?
give over 3-5 minutes for injection
for infusion dilute with glucose or NaCl
4 groups which shouldnt recieve sodium valproate?
childbearing age
acute porphyrias- mitochondrial disorders
personal or family history of hepatic dysfunction
systemic lupus
why shouldnt sodium valproate be used in people iwth acute porphyrias?
mitochondrial disorders- higher rate of acute liver failure and liver related deaths
adverse effects of sodium valproate to monitor?
liver toxicity: raised enzymes are usually transient but should be reassessed and mointored- for 6 months
blood and hepatic disorders
pancreatitis: seek medical attention if symptoms such as abdo pain, nausea, vomiting
counselling points for sodium valproate?
symptoms of pancreatitis: abdo pain, N&V consult medical help
withdrawl must occur over at least 4 weeks
side effects of sodium valproate?
abdominal pain, anaemia, alopecia, behavioural changes, agranulocytosis
can you use in pregnancy?
no change to a different drug unless no alternative: sign a risk acknowledgement form
teratogenic: neurodevelopmental effects
