HOW DOES METFORMIN WORK?
do you need pancreatic function?
A
decreases glycogenesis and increases utilisation of glucose- need insulin present aka residual pancreatic function
2
Q
what to do in renal impairment?
A
if <30ml/min stop due to the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis
dose reduction in mild impairment
3
Q
who should not receive this medication?
A
acute metabolic acidosis risk factors for lactic acidosis CHF stop if dehydrated avoid in conditions which worsen renal function or cause tissue hypoxia hepatic impairment if hypoxia is likely
4
Q
adverse effects?
A
GI DISORDERS v common
abdopain, skin reactions, lactic acidosis, hepatitis
5
Q
how can you reduce the risk of GI side effects?

titrate dose
