what to monitor with gentamycin?
serum aminoglycoside concentations if renal impairment or elderly
if multiple daily doses- take bloods after 1 hour and just before next dose (peak and trough)
check concentration in children after 3-4 doses
auditory and vestibular function
side effects of gentamycin
skin reactions
tinnitus
nausea and vomiting
can you use gentamycin in pregnancy?
risk of auditory or vestibular nerve damage in the infant if used in 2nd or 3rd trimester
avoid unless essential
if given, must monitor serum levels
what can happen if gentamycin is given to patients with mitochondrial disorders?
increasedrisk of deafness

streptomycin, amikacin, tobramycin, neomycin
