how can we use social psychology to explain and reduce football violence
where is football violence seen and when
2006 World cup between England and Ecuador - violence between German and English supporters
hoe can realistic conflict theory be used to explain football violence
- both teams competing in the World Cup = equal status
- competing for the World Cup trophy = zero-sum resource = conflict will arise
- only one winner
what issues arise from football violence
damage to property, injuries to supporters and police, distress for residents in that area, children trying to enjoy the atmosphere are subjected to swearing and vandalism
how can the social identity theory be used to explain football violence
- wear football stripes, scarves and face paint = group norms
- identify with there group = in-group favouritism
- hostility arises between in-group and out-group
what happened on the evening before the match
English supporters seen throwing chairs and bottles at German supporters and both shouting abusive chants
how were the police involved and how many were there
- 1800 police officers present
- armed with tear gas and water cannons
- arrested 400 supporters
- utilised CCTV footage
- locked up ringleaders overnight
what were the issues with the police involved
- financial costs for more police to patrol and locking up hooligans
- some innocent supporters may have been caught up in the violence and wrongly accused
how can the social impact theory be used to help reduce violence
- increasing the number of police - many sources exerting social influence
- used immediacy to control the violence - police face to face with supporters
how can we use the agency theory to help reduce violence
- by arresting ringleaders, innocent supporters will shift back to the autonomous state = take responsibility
- may feel moral strain for becoming violent
- innocent supporters have blindly obeyed the ringleaders - agentic state
