- 850,000 people have it in UK
- 55 million worldwide
- 10 million cases every year
- caused by brain damage - stroke/disease
- women to men = 2:1
- NOT a normal part of ageing

why is dementia degenerative
A
no cure for dementia and all types are progressive, the structure and chemistry of the brain increasingly becomes damaged

what are the implications of dementia
A
- physical strain on the NHS
- emotional strain on family members
- carers need to help patients deal with memory loss

how can you apply the working memory model to help with dementia
A
- no distractions while giving instructions
- WMM says its not possible to do two language tasks at the same time
- helps minimise strain on the carers

how can you apply semantic memory to help with dementia
A
- patients have trouble recalling factual information - temporal lobe
- using memory aids (visual reminders)
- external cues would reduce the need for patients to rely on their LTM

- encourage to talk about past experiences in their lives
- reduce stress as doesn’t recall specific facts
- use diaries and pictures of family
