Social Facilitation Flashcards
Social facilitation
The behavioural effects due to others present (BEDTOP)
The effects of others on performance
Audience
Co-actors
Social reinforcers
Competition
Audience
Just watches
Co-actors
Doing sports alongside you
Social reinforcers
Encourage or criticise performance
Competitors
In conflict with performer
Zajonc model
The audience and co actors cause an increase in arousal due to their presence but are PASSIVE as they are not involved in the event.
Competitors and Social reinforcers have more DIRECT IMPACT giving encouragement or causing distractions
Inhibition
when performance is made worse by the presence of others
beginner
Facilitation
when performance is improved by the presence of others
expert
Performance and the dominant response
EXPERT—> well learned/ accurate dominant response, under pressure this response becomes automatic, simple and correct. This may lead to positive performances as FACILITATION occurs
BEGINNER—> poorly learned/ inaccurate response, under pressure this response becomes automatic, complex and incorrect. This may lead to pressurised performances as INHIBITION occurs
Evaluation Apprehension
Fear of being judged
High arousal- created by being watched by experts/ important ppl
These people create judgement
Unconfident—> increase arousal
Increased arousal if: audience is known, critical or experts
Preventing social inhibition
Getting the players familiar with playing in front of a crowd
Gradually introducing evaluation
Improving focus and concentration
Train in front of a crowd
Gradually introduce evaluation
Lower arousal using relaxation techniques
Selective attention
