Achieving a shared goal/ target helps to bind people together so they commit to each other and work hard to achieve the goal, this raises motivation.

Conflicts are resolved, the team begins to settle down and cooperate focussing on achieving goals.

How long
Time taken in each stage changes- settled teams accept new players quickly while representative teams take longer to settle.
Whether this process occurs at all is down to the cohesion of the group. Eg—The England football team doesn’t seem to bond so underperforms
