Personality
Unique psychological make up
Different situations can have a different effect on individuals as it can create different emotions causing people to act differently
Trait theory
Suggests:
Born with innate characteristics called TRAITS
They are stable, consistent and enduring
Personality can change with situations- we can develop our personalities with experience
Social Learning Approach
Suggests:
Behaviour is learned from others who are successful and from people we respect by socialisation
The success must be reinforced as we copy successful behaviour

Occurs when a person is motivated to learn by watching someone else work and be rewarded so are motivated by this

Theory combines trait theory + social learning to predicts behaviour in a specific situation

Use of inherent traits displayed in specific situations

Suggest that a performer may adapt or adopt a specific role when the situation demands
Credulous Approach
You believe the theories and accept a link that personality can predict behaviour
Sceptical Approach
You don’t believe the theories and doubt the link that personality can predict behaviour
How can the interactionist perspective improve performance?
Predict potential aggressive or unacceptable behaviour
Recreate situations during training to allow the player to become accustomed to them for games
Try and change the players behaviour by encouraging the player to adapt to circumstances
Questionnaire
Advantages - efficient, quick, deals with lots of info
Disadvantages- biased answers, misunderstand questions
Observation
Advantages - true to life
Disadvantages- subjective, behaviour changed when observed
Interview
Advantages - more depth, specific
Disadvantages- time consuming, similar to questionnaire
