The Locus of Causality
Is it in the control of the performer (internal) or out of their control (external)
Internal attribute- within performers control eg- effort
External attribute- outside of performers control eg- referee
The Stability Dimension
Is it a permanent or changeable reason
Unstable attribute- can change in a short amount of time
Stable attribute- unlikely to change in a short amount of time
Self serving bias
Using external and/or unstable reasons for losing
Promotes self esteem
When you win it’s you
When you lose it’s because of external reason
Learned helplessness
Using internal stable reasons for losing
Lowers confidence and motivation
Stopped by attributing success to internal factors
Can be specific
Attribution Retraining
Changing reasons given for success or failure
Change perceptions using Weiner
Change internal stable attribution to external unstable
Promotes self esteem
Set realistic performance goals
Highlight previous success
Positive reinforcement
