Social Cognition (sept.9) Flashcards
What is construal?
People’s interpretation and inference about the stimuli or situations they confront
How is construal shaped?
BY YOUR SCHEMAS
- by many factors
- pre-existing knowledge, context, etc.
Why is construal important?
Because how we interpret (construe) reality is a powerful determinant of our experience and behavior
What are the types of social knowledge?
- declarative knowledge
- procedural knowledge
What is declarative knowledge?
knowledge about types of people and social situations
- knowing THAT
What is procedural knowledge?
rules, skills, and habits for thinking and acting
- knowing HOW
What is a schema?
a knoweldge structure consisteing of any organized body of storded info
Declarative Knowledge Example (People)
- role schemas (concepts and stereotypes)
- –social roles (police officer, professor)
- –stereotype (gender, ethnicity)
- –personality (extravert, nuerotic)
- significant other schemas
- –mom, dad, uncle, friend, partner
- self schemas
Declarative Knowledge Example (Situations and Events)
- event schemas (scripts)
- –wedding, dinner party, funeral
- relational schemas
- –one person criticizing another
- –one person supporting another
- narratives
- –freedom fighters
- –knight in shining armor
- –terrorist
How do declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge effect our overall social knowledge?
- selective attention
- construal
- memory
Effect on attention (selective)
a schema can make our attention selective, filtering out things not relevant to the schema
ex partners of relationship timed how long they look at other people and could predict which couples would break uo
Effect on construal
a schema can change the way that we process information
ex trigger reckless or adventurous schema and read ambiguous donald story, report donald as reckless or adventurous
Effect on memory
remember things attatched to a schema
ex participants told to remember list or to form an impression, those told to form an impression remembered the list better because it became attatched to a schema
