What is the essence of informational influence?
people are a source of information
What is informational influence?
taking others’ commets or actions as a source of information about what is correct, proper, effective, etc.
How is information influence important for our construal of physical reality?
- look to people to confirm an experience (if it is normal, ex. earthquake)
When do we look to others for information?
when reality is ambiguous
How is information influence important for our constual of social reality?
- pairs of friends individually read statement about a person and then gave a first impression
- friends used similar trait dimensions (contrue social reality in a similar way because thye have influenced each other)
How do we create a shared view of reality?
Over time by communicating with people about what we see and confirming what we see together
What are descriptive norms?
perceptions of how most people behave in a given context
What variables moderate informational influence?
- consensus
- similarity
How does consensus impact informational influence?
the more people you see doing something, the more you think you shoudl do it too
How does similarity impact informational influence?
people are more likely to follow people who are similar to them, a part of their own group
