Insecure Self Esteem (oct.5) Flashcards
How do we come to an evaluation?
expectancy x value
What may underlie self evaluation?
- evolutionary analysis, some inheritable survival trait
- other motives
What are two possible motives for self evalutation?
- mastery
- social sources
How does mastery motivate self esteem?
- we feel rewarded for completeing something
- perhaps those who completed more survived more and passed on their genetics
What are two social sources of motivation?
(a) social rank (feel good when dominant, in high status)
b) need to belong (accepted, included, attatched
How is the need to belong important to our self esteem?
(1) Need to belong theory = sociometer
(2) Conditional Acceptance
(3) Internalization
What is the sociometer?
- our self esteem corresponds with feelings of being accepted by significant others
- self esteem acts as a system to moniter social inclusion and social performance
- self esteem keeps our behavior in line
- ex people asked to rate how they would feel doing certain actions and it matched with how they thought others would view them
What is conditional acceptance?
the idea that people will accept you IF you do something of don’t do other things
What is internalization?
contrual of a social interation turned inward (potentially implicit)
- can lead to imagining things that aren’t happening if certain schemas are triggered
- the self schema is linked to relational schemas
- unworthy self is linked to being critical of others
Spreading Activation and Self Esteem
- lexical decison task, primed with failure, more quickly identify rejection for low self esteem
- high self esteem does not necessarily link success with acceptance, perhaps they have a more unconditional view creating high self esteem in the first place
