What is self esteem?
overall positive or negative evaluation people have of themselves
What is TRAIT self esteem?
chronic, overall, ongoing
ex measured with Rosenberg Scale
What is STATE self esteem?
temporary, right now
What is IMPLICIT self esteem?
automatic and possible nonconsious
- measured with implicit association test (IAT)
- tap hand for good and self or bad and other
- tap right hand for god and other and left for bad and self
- people with high self esteem are significantly slowed down
- people with low self esteem aren’t as slowed
- —can more easily assocaite themself with bad
What are the 5 self evaluation procedures?
(1) comparison with standards
(2) influence of domain
(3) attribution
(4) overgeneralization
(5) social construction
What is comparison with standards?
- set expectations and standards for oneself
- –are you meeting those standards
- comparing ourself to others
- –ex filling out self esteem questions next to Mr.Clean (self esteem goes down) or Mr.Dirty (self esteem goes up)
What is the influence of domain?
is the area of comparison important to your worth?
ex students who don’t consider academic worth important to their sense of self don’t experience as severe an effect in self esteem when receiving test scores (pos or neg)
How does attribution effect our self evaluation?
internal attribution = blame or credit yourself
external attribution = blame or credit others
What is overgeneralization?
spreading the self evaluation from a specific domain to a more general self esteem
- can you compartmentalize?
- people with depression are often high overgeneralizers
How does social construction effect our self evaluation?
external feedback (real or imagined) ex grad students evaluating their work, graded themselves lower with subliminal prime of their prof frowning at them
