Gallup Rouge Test (self-recognition)
- chimp in a room with a mirror
- first responded as if it were another chim
- began to recognize themself
- put red dot on their forehead
- touched their face more with the red dot implying they new it was themselves and they saw it was there on them
What was the Gallup Rouge test replicated with?
replicated with children, self-recognition develops around 18 months
What is subjective self-awareness?
distinguish between self and environment
What is objective self-awareness?
simple representation of the self (mirror test)
- chimps, dolphins, elephants, other apes
What is symbolic self-awareness?
complex and abstract representation
- distinctly human?
- langauge is an indication of this?
What are three aspects of the self?
(1) material self (body, possessions, etc.)
(2) spiritual self (private, thoughts, feelings, reasoning, problems solving)
(3) social self (how you are seen by others)
What are aspects of the social self?
- relational (self with other, specific relationship)
- collective (as a memeber of a group)
- individual (personal traits, abilites, preferences)
How do self schemas work?
the same as other schemas and forms of social knowledge
- chronic accessability
- temporary accessability
- implicit effects (subliminal primes)
What are the Self Construal Processes?
(1) observation
(2) assimilation and differentiation
(3) self-narrative (autobiographical memory)
(4) self perception theory
(5) social construction
What is the observation process?
- external observation (things around me
- internal observation (thoughts, feelings, bodily sensation)
- contingency between internal and external
- –feeling agency (telling your hand to move)
- –stub toe and feel pain
What is the assimilation and differentiation process?
- examine ways in which the self is similar to and different from others
- similar = self stereotyping = taking on characteristics of a desired group identity
- different = stand out
- –ex black student mention race when talking about identity way more than white students do
What is the self narrative process?
- the unity of ideas and memories we have about ourself
- very selective which memories end up in your narrative
