Soc25: Sports Psychology Flashcards
Open skill
When the situation is always changing in game, players have to continually adapt to situation
Closed skill
Take place in a stable predictable environment and the players know exactly what to do and when
Basic skill
Player finds it easy and needs little concentration to do it
Complex skill
Player needs complete concentration as they find it difficult
Low organisation skill
Skill with clear simple phases/parts that can be broken down and practiced separately
High organisation skills
Has a lot of complicated phases/parts which cant be done separately as the actions are closely linked and require good coordination and timing
Visual guidance
Guidance through visual demonstrations which the student then replicates
Advantages + Disadvantage of visual guidance
Ad: learner will know what the skill looks like
Dis: if shown through videos learner cant ask questions for clarification
Verbal guidance
Clearly communicating how the learner should perform a move
Advantages + Dis advantage of verbal guidance
Ad: coach can emphasis specific points about the skill
Dis: difficult for beginners to understand specially with complicated skills
Manual/ mechanical guidance
When the coach actually makes physical contact to guide and help players
Advantages + Disadvantages of manual/ mechanical guidance
Ad: can help player execute skills safely + ‘feel’ how the movement should be done
Dis: this is not possible for all sports
Intrinsic feedback
Comes from the performer themselves
- can motivate or demotivate depending on players self confidence
Extrinsic feedback
Comes from an outside source (teacher or coach)
Concurrent feedback
Given at the time of the performance e.g coach shouting from the sideline
