Soc14: Muscle System Flashcards
What are the 3 different muscle groups?
Voluntary
Involuntary
Cardiac
What is a voluntary muscle?
Under your control, you choose when to contract or relax them
What is your Deltoid?
Abducts upper arm at the shoulder
What are your Pectorals?
Adduction of upper arm at the shoulder
What are your Triceps?
Extends lower arm at the elbow
What are your biceps?
Flexes arm at the elbow
What are your Lattisimus Dorsi?
Adducts and roates the humerus at the shoulder (draws the arm back and in towards the body)
What are your External Obliques?
Laterally flex and roate the spine
What are your Gluteus Maximus?
Extends the leg at the hip
What are your Hip Flexors?
Flexes the leg at the hip
Muscle fibers?
Make up voluntary (skeletal) muscle; divided into type I, type IIa and type IIx
Type I?
Slow twitch; suited to low intensity, e.g marathon running, as they can be used for a long period without fatiguing
Type IIa?
Fast twitch; used in anaerobic work can be improved through endurance training to increase their resistance to fatigue
Type IIx?
Fast twitch; used in anaerobic work and can generate much greater force than other fibre types, but fatigue quick
Myoglobin?
A red pigment that transports oxygen to muscles
