Soc 16: The Structure Of The Blood Vessels And Blood Distribution Flashcards
Veins
Carry blood back into the heart! Much thinner walls, contains many valves to help deoxygenated blood flow to the heart, Pulmonary vein is different as it carries oxygenated blood from lungs back to heart
Capillaries
At one end capillaries carry oxygenated blood which transfers oxygen and nutrients and at the other end they carry deoxygenated blood into the veins, picking up waste products, Where gaseous exchange takes place
Red blood cells
Transports oxygen from the lungs and carbon dioxide from the cells to the lungs, Contain uaemoglobin which stores oxygen and carbon dioxide, Important to a long distance runners
White blood cells
Has a defence system, Produce antibodies, If an althlete has a disease or infection they may not be able to train/perform
Platelets
Formed in bone marrow, fragments that clump to help blood clots and stop bleeding, Blood is first line of defence in the repair of a wound, When a blood vessel is cut platelets rush to the area and swell into irregular shapes, If skin gets an abrasion the blood platelets will clot the blood to stop bleeding
Plasma
To take nutrients, hormones and protiens, put their waste products into the plasma. The plasma then help remove this waste from the body
Immune system
The structures and processes in your body that stop diseases
Thrombokinase
Substance involved in blood clotting
Seretonin
Horhome that triggers the clotting process
Plasma
The fluid part of blood
Eruthrocyte
Red blood cells
Haemoglobin
A red protein in blood that transports pxygen
Anaemia
Where a lack of red cells in the blood
Leukocyte
White blood cells
Pathogen
Causes disease, such as a virus
