What are the 8 different types of injuries?
Soft Tissue, Dislocation, Fractures, Sprain, Strain, Torn Cartilage, Concussion, Abrasion
What is Abrasion?
2 things rubbing against each other
How can Abrasion occur?
Friction against a rough surface e.g concrete, artifcial pitches
What is a Torn Cartliage?
Cartliage is a firm elastic substance which line adjoining bone
How can a Torn cartliage occur?
Wear and tear from long term overuse
What is a Fracture?
Cracked or broken bone
How can Fractures occur?
Collisions, opposing force
What is a Concussion?
An impact to the head
How can Concussions occur?
Large impact/blow to your head
What is a Dislocation?
A bone comes out of a joint
How can Dislocation occur?
Hard blow, too much pressure
What is a Soft Tissue Injury?
Movement outside of their normal range (joint injury)
How can Soft Tissue Injuries occur?
Overstreched, tendons, ligaments, muscle and cartliage
What is a Strain?
Tear or overstretched muscle or tendon
How can Strains occur?
Twisting/tearing a tendon or muscle
What is a Sprain?
Stretching too far past the normal range of a joint
How can Sprains occur?
Damaged ligament
What does ‘RICE’ stand for
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation
Rest
Rest the injured area for 48 hours
Ice
Ice for 20 minutes 4-8 times a day
Compress
Compress to help reduce swelling
Elevate
Elevate the injured limb 6-10 inches above the heart
What are the 5 injury prevention techniques?
Correct application of the principles of training
Correct application and adherence to the rules
Use of appropriate protective clothing
Checking of equipment and facilities
Use of a warm-up and cool-down
