Soc10 Preventing Injuries Flashcards
Concussion
Caused by blow to the head, in many different sports. It can cause slurred speech in bad cases. Can also cause headaches in less severe cases. Can occur in rugby when rucking, and NFL when fighting for the ball.
Fractures
It is a break or cracked bone. There are different types of fractures: closed (skin not punctured), compound (bone protrudes skin), simple (bone just cracked), stress (fatigue or overuse). Found in basketball when dribbling with the ball, and in gymnastics when landing tricks.
Dislocations

Torn cartilage

Soft tissue injury
Joints where two or more bones meet. Common because movement past the range can tear tendons. Caused in many sports such as football.
Strains
Pull or tear tendon. Most common in the back of the hamstring. Occurs in golfers elbows and tennis players elbows from over use.
