SOC 26: SKILL PRACTICE Flashcards
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF SKILLS
- open/closed
- basic/complex
- low/high
WHAT IS AN OPEN SKILL
always changing depending on the environment which involves decision making
WHAT IS A CLOSED SKILL
it has a stable environment and not affected by it and the skill is habitual
WHAT IS A BASIC SKILL
it requires easy and low concentration which has only little info to process and there are few descions to make
WHAT IS A COMPLEX SKILL
it requires hard and high concentration and has lots of info to process and descions need to be made quickly
WHAT IS A LOW SKILL
it has uncomplicated phases and is able to break into phases
WHAT IS A HIGH SKILL
it has complicated phases which requires large amount of attention and coordination
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF PRACTICE
- massed
- distributed
- fixed
- variavle
WHAT IS A MASSED PRACTICE
a practice until learnt with no break and is intense and mentally challenging
WHAT IS A DISTRIBUTED PRACTICE
a practice that is over a several of session with plenty of rest break
WHAT IS A FIXED PRACTICE
a practice in a single situation which is done over and over again which are used by closed skills
WHAT IS A VARIABLE PRACTICE
a practice that varies in different situations and can be used for open skills
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF GUIDANCE
- visual/verbal
- manual/mechanical
WHAT IS VISUAL GUIDANCE
- coach showing technique
- showing video
- easy to understand but hard to show difficult skills
WHAT IS VERBAL GUIDANCE
- skills shown in person
- can be hard to understand but important for harder skills
- good for advanced performers
- ideal for open skills
WHAT IS MANUAL GUIDANCE
- gives feel for movement
- not always practical
- used for learners of all abilities
- helps build confidence
WHAT IS MECHANICAL GUIDANCE
- using equipment to help a performer complete a skill
- vert effective in early stages of learning
- helps build confidence
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF VISUAL GUIDANCE
Visual guidance, through a demonstration or video, means that the learner knows what skill they have to perform and what it looks like
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF VISUAL GUIDANCE
If visual guidance is given in the form of a video, learners will not be able to ask questions to clarify their understanding
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF VERBAL GUIDANCE
The coach can explain in further detail or emphasise specific points about the skill
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF VERBAL GUIDANCE
It can be difficult for beginers to understand verbal guidance, especially if it is to do with a difficult or complicated skill
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF MANUAL AND MECHANICAL GUIDANCE
The coach can help the performer to execute the skill safely and successfully and ‘feel how the movement should be done
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF MANUAL AND MECHANICAL GUIDANCE
it is not possible for all sports
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF FEEDBACK
- intrinsic/extrinsic
- concurrent/terminal
WHAT IS INTRINSIC FEEDBACK
feedback that comes from the performer themsevles when someone knows when something feels right or wrong
WHAT IS EXTRINSIC FEEDBACK
feedback that comes from an external source and motivates them to improve
WHAT IS CONCURRENT FEEDBACK
feedback that is provided during the performance which can be acted on immediately
WHAT IS TERMINAL FEEDBACK
feedback that is provided at the end of the game or performance
