Soc 21 Planes And Axes Flashcards
What are planes?
They are theoretical divisions that divide the body into sections. There are 3 planes of motion in the body
Sagittal Plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into left and right halves. Movements in this plane include flexion and extension.
Frontal Plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into front and back halves. Movements in this plane include abduction and adduction.
Transverse Plane
: A horizontal plane that divides the body into upper and lower halves. Movements in this plane include rotation.
Medial-Lateral Axis
An imaginary line that runs horizontally from side to side and is perpendicular to the sagittal plane. Movements occur around this axis in the frontal plane.
Anterior-Posterior Axis
An imaginary line that runs horizontally from front to back and is perpendicular to the transverse plane. Movements occur around this axis in the sagittal plane.
Longitudinal Axis
An imaginary line that runs vertically from top to bottom and is perpendicular to the frontal plane. Movements occur around this axis in the transverse plane.
Rotation
Circular movement around an axis, typically in the transverse plane.
