SOC 20 : Levers Flashcards
What is a lever?
In your body, the term ‘lever’ refers to a system of muscles and bones working together to bring about movement.
How do levers function in the body?
When you exercise, your muscles pull on your bones, and your bones create movement, acting as levers.
What is a lever?
A lever is a structure that has four components.
What is the fulcrum in a lever?
The fulcrum (or pivot) is the point around which the lever rotates.
What is the load in a lever system?
The load is the force that is applied by the lever system.
What is the effort in a lever system?
The effort is a force that is applied by the user of the lever system.
What is the lever arm?
The lever arm is a rigid bar such as a bone.
How are levers classified?
Levers are classified according to the placement of the fulcrum, load, and effort.
What are the three different classes of levers?
1) First class
2) Second class
3) Third class
What does ‘FLE’ stand for in levers?
‘FLE’ helps to remember the order of the levers: Fulcrum, Load, Effort.
What is a first class lever?
A first class lever has the fulcrum in the middle.
What is a second class lever?
A second class lever has the load in the middle.
What is a third class lever?
A third class lever has the effort in the middle.
What is an example of a first class lever?
Tricep dip.
The elbow is the fulcrum which sits between the load (bodyweight) and the effort applied by the tricep.
What is the role of the elbow in a tricep dip?
The elbow acts as the fulcrum.
