skin bone and tissue infections Flashcards
what is included in the normal skin flora?
staphylococcus spp
micrococcus spp
corynebacterium spp
cutibacterium acnes
what are Staphylococcus spp?
G+ bacteria that forms yellow colonies on blood agar
catalase positive (react in H2O2)
some are coagulase-negative (all non pathogens)
what is Staphylococcus aureus?
- coagulase positive (pathogen)
- has hemolysins, interotoxins, pyrogenic toxins
- often causes resistance
what are Streptococcus spp?
G+ catalase negative bacteria that form white different sized colonies on agar
what are the categories of Streptococcus spp?
alpha-hemolytic (partial RBC hemolysis)
beta-hemolytic (full RBC hemolysis)
gamma-hemolytic (no RBC hemolysis)
what is Streptococcus pyogenes?
group A strep
aggressive beta hemolytic short chain
what bacteria are found in dead skin cells?
anaerobes
facultative - S. aureus and E. coli
obligate - B. fragilis and fusiform spp
what are vesicles?
small fluid filled lesions like chicken pox
what are bullae?
larger flat fluid filled lesions
what are macules?
flat red inflammatory lesion
what are papsules?
raised lesion, if with pus - pustules
what is impetigo?
superififcal vesicular lesion
caused by S. pyogenes or S. aureus
what is follicultiis?
infection of hair follicle
caused by S. aureus
what is cellulitis?
acute spreading subcutaneous infection
caused by S. aureus, S. pyogenes, or anareobes
what is erysipelas?
superficial cellulitis with lympathic involvement
caused by S. pyogenes
what is a furuncle?
deep inflamed nodule
caused by S. aureus
what is a carbuncle?
bigger furuncle in subcutaneous fat
caused by S. aureus
what is staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome?
acute febrile illness with sunburn like eruption
caused by S. aureus
what is scaled skin syndrome?
widespread bullae with exfoliative exotoxin
caused by S. aureus
what is myostitis?
infection of skeletel muscle
caused by S. aureus
what is gas gangrene?
necrotizing fasciitis of the skeletal muscle
caused by C. perfringens
what is necrotizing fasciitis caused by?
S. pyogenes, C. perfringens, mixed anaerobes and aerobes
what makes someone predisposed to necrotizing fasciitis?
diabetes, perineal infection, trauma, abdominal surgery
what is septic arthritis?
infection of joints
caused by S. aureus, streptococcal spp, g- bacteria
