Herpes Flashcards
what are herpesviruses?
large icosahedral dsDNA viruses with glycoprotein spikes that replicate in nucleus and cause latent infections
what are herpes simplex viruses 1 and 2?
infection of oral, ocular (1) and genital (2)
how doe hsv1 and hsv2 get into your body?
penetrates into skin
local replication
entry into cutaneous neurons
centrifugal migration of virions to epidermis
what is herpes labialis?
cold sores
last 10-14 days
may be single or clustered
may be triggered by stress
what is genital herpes?
primarily hsv2
spread through skin-skin contact (often mom-baby during delivery)
75% of transmission is during asymptomatic shedding
what is the difference between hsv1 and hsv2?
1 has less recurrences and less frequent asymptomatic shedding (2 rarely reoccurs if oral)
how is hsv1 and 2 treated?
acylovir
doesn’t do much
usually used on primary infection and with really bad relapses
how long do herpres outbreaks last?
pain subsides at approx week three
how severe is neonatal herpres?
very - causes encephalitis with 80% fatality without treatment
what is epstein-barr virus?
mono
how does mono spread/replicate?
spread through saliva, infections results in local replication and secondary viremia
are people usually symptomatic with mono?
children are usually asympomatic
teens usually have symptoms
90% of adults have immunity
what are the symptoms of mono?
tonsil enlargement
skin rash
large liver/spleen
how is mono diagnosed?
increased lymphocytes/monocytes
atypical lymphocytes/thombocytopneia
elevated liver enzymes
heterphile antivodies using monspot
what is cytomegalovirus?
spread worldwide commonly in low socioeconmic groups
all infections result in viral latency
