HPV and Gastroenteritis Flashcards
what is HPV?
small non-enveloped circular RNA virus
how is HPV transmitted?
virus is shed in cells shed from warty lesions on skin
how is HPV spread?
skin-to-skin contact
what are the types of HPV?
skin-skin (1,2,3)
low risk mucosal (6,11)
high risk mucosal (16,18)
what does the HPV vaccine protect against?
16, 18 (high risk), 6,11 (low risk) and others
how does the HPV vaccine work?
through humoral immune response
what is viral gastroenteritis caused by?
norovirus, rotavirus, enteric adenovirus, astrovirus
how does gastroenteritis happen?
virus replicates in mucosal cells of small intestine and damages transport, causing dehydration
how long does gastroenteritis last?
short symptom times and short incubation times
what are the symptoms of gastroenteritis?
vomiting, fever, non-bloody diarrhea
how is gastroenteritis diagnosed?
clinical syndrome
PCR
antigens in stool
how is gastroenteritis treated?
fluids and maybe pepto
what is norovirus?
“winter vomitting disease”
small RNA virus with multiple serotypes
very infectious
antibodies are usually acquired later in life
what is rotavirus?
naked dsRNA virus that looks like a wheel on EM
vaccine!!
how severe is rotavirus?
can be severe in neonates/young children
often asymptomatic in adults/older children
