Skin
What does the skin include
The epidermis (incl. keritnised sole/pads)
Dermis (loose connective tissue)
Hypodermis (adipose connective tissue - subcutaneous layer)
Dermis layer contents
Highly vascularised
Hair and nails originate in grooves
Glands eg sweat and subateous glands (lubricates)
Nail/hoof attachments
Highly keratinised epithelium
Hoof wall
Covers distal phalanx/coffin bone/pedal bone
Grows from coronary dermis
Laminar dermis
Laminar dermis is folded (forming laminae) to help adhere hoof to distal phalanx
Coronary cushion and digital cushion
Beneath the coronary and the frog seems is fat and elastic tissue which forms the coronary and digital cushion
Coronary cushion and digital cushion
These provide some pliability and give against concussive forces
Which mammal has lateral flank scent glands
Hamsters - secretes oil with pheromones in to help with mating
Which mammal has ventral scent glands
Gerbils and ferrets
Skin in reptiles
Epidermis contain large amount of keratin which can be folded to create scales
What is ecdysis
Removal of old skin to grow new skin
Lizard ecdysis
Old patches of skin are shed and replaced
Snake ecdysis
Slough the entire body skin in one piece
Autonomy
Fracture planes in their tail so it can be shed if grasped by predators - regrows via autonomy ( new nervous system )
