Injection Sites Flashcards
What are the 3 main types for injection sites
Subcutaneous - under the skin adipose layer
Intramuscular - into the muscle
Intravenous - into vein
Reaction time of each sites
Subcutaneous (slowest)
Intramuscular (quicker)
Intravenous (instantaneous)
Where can subcutaneous injections be given
Technically anywhere under the skin but horses = neck or shoulder and dog/cats = scruff on neck. Loser skin is best.
Where can intramuscular injections be administered
Equine = neck muscle, gluteals, pectorals
Dog/cat = lumbar expaxial, tricep, quads (if animal large enough).
No longer use hamstring because of sciatic nerve running through it.
Blood sampling sites
Jugular vein = neck (horses)
Cephalic vein = front leg (dogs/cats)
Saphenous vein = hind leg (dogs/cats)
Wing vein = wing (birds)
Medial metatarsal = inside of claws (birds)
Marginal ear vein = ear (rabbits)
Ventral tail vein = underside of tail (reptiles)
