1
Q

Anatomically the body can be divided into 3 different areas, what are they? (Excluding birds and reptiles)

Q

What is the significance between the 3 cavities

A

Between the thoracic and abdominal cavity they are separated by the diaphragm however there is no division between abdominal and pelvic cavities.

Q

Where is the Thoracic Cavity and what does it contain

A

In the chest. Contains organs and tissues that function in the respiratory, cardiovascular, immune, digestive and nervous systems. E.g heart, lungs, trachea, vagus nerve,thymus and oesophagus.

Q

What are the 5 boundaries in the thoracic cavity?

A

Cranial = thoracic inlet (entrance)
Dorsal = spine/muscles (back)
Ventral = sterna’s (front surface)
Caudal = diaphragm (towards back)
Lateral = ribs, costal cartilage and intercostal muscles.

Q

What are the 4 layers in the thoracic cavity?

A

Visceral pleura = lines organs
Intrapleural space = pleural cavity
Parietal pleura = lines the outside of the cavity
Thoracic wall

Q

What would happen if there was a gap/hole in thoracic wall

A

Air would fill space and go inside known as pneumothorax - air in the chest.

Q

What does the abdominal cavity contain

A

Digestive system (not including rectum), related glands, components of urogenital (kidneys) and reproductive system (top of uterus). Eg, liver, s+L intestines, stomach, spleen, kidneys, cecum. Bladder when full.

Q

What are the 4 boundaries in the pelvic cavity

A

Cranial = pelvic inlet ( no physical seperation from abdominal cavity)
Dorsal = sacrum/spine
Ventral = pelvis (pubis/ischium)
Caudal = opening of caudal pelvis

14
Q

What is the pelvic cavity lined with

A

Peritoneum membrane which is the same as the abdominal cavity due to there being no separation.

16
Q

What is the mesentry layer

A

Large sheet (double layer of peritoneum) full of fat and blood vessels to protect organs. Greater omentum is an example of this which hangs off stomach.

17
Q

Where do we take TPR

A

Temp = anus
Pulse = left side of thoracic cavity
Respiration = either side of thoracic cavity

18
Q

What is the crop

A

Enlargement of the oesophagus for storing foods - found only in birds
