Body Cavaties Flashcards
Anatomically the body can be divided into 3 different areas, what are they? (Excluding birds and reptiles)
Body cavities - thoracic, abdominal and pelvic
What is the significance between the 3 cavities
Between the thoracic and abdominal cavity they are separated by the diaphragm however there is no division between abdominal and pelvic cavities.
Where is the Thoracic Cavity and what does it contain
In the chest. Contains organs and tissues that function in the respiratory, cardiovascular, immune, digestive and nervous systems. E.g heart, lungs, trachea, vagus nerve,thymus and oesophagus.
What are the 5 boundaries in the thoracic cavity?
Cranial = thoracic inlet (entrance)
Dorsal = spine/muscles (back)
Ventral = sterna’s (front surface)
Caudal = diaphragm (towards back)
Lateral = ribs, costal cartilage and intercostal muscles.
What is the membrane that lines the entire thoracic cavity
Pleura
What is the function of the pleura
Secretes lubricant to stop lungs sticking to the body wall.
What are the 4 layers in the thoracic cavity?
Visceral pleura = lines organs
Intrapleural space = pleural cavity
Parietal pleura = lines the outside of the cavity
Thoracic wall
What would happen if there was a gap/hole in thoracic wall
Air would fill space and go inside known as pneumothorax - air in the chest.
What does the abdominal cavity contain
Digestive system (not including rectum), related glands, components of urogenital (kidneys) and reproductive system (top of uterus). Eg, liver, s+L intestines, stomach, spleen, kidneys, cecum. Bladder when full.
What are the 4 boundaries of the abdominal cavity
Cranial = diaphragm
Dorsal = spine/muscles
Ventral/lateral = abdominal muscles ( front and side)
Caudal = pelvic inlet
What membrane lines the abdominal cavity
Peritoneum - similar to pleura just in the abdomen
What does the pelvic cavity contain
Bladder, rectum and some reproductive organs (uterus, testes)
What are the 4 boundaries in the pelvic cavity
Cranial = pelvic inlet ( no physical seperation from abdominal cavity)
Dorsal = sacrum/spine
Ventral = pelvis (pubis/ischium)
Caudal = opening of caudal pelvis
What is the pelvic cavity lined with
Peritoneum membrane which is the same as the abdominal cavity due to there being no separation.
How many cavities does a bird/ reptiles have and what is it called
Coelomic cavity - just one with no diaphragm.
