Simple distillation (summer exam) Flashcards
Simple distillation is used to separate a liquid from a soluble solid in a solution.
JUST KNOW!!
Simple distillation is used to separate solutions with very different boiling points. For example, water can be separated from salty water solution.
JUST KNOW!!
LOOK AT THE ACTUAL REVISION SLIDES FOR UNDERSTANDING
yes big boyo
1.The salty solution is heated in the round bottom flask.
2.Water evaporates/boils and form a gas called water vapour/steam.
3.Water vapours rises.
4.The water vapour passes into the Liebig condenser, where it cools and condenses.
5.Liquid water drips into a beaker.
6.All the water has evaporated from the salt solution, leaving the salt behind.
Take it slow
Simple distillation: Why does this method work?
All the water has evaporated from the salt solution, leaving the salt behind?
This is because water has a much lower boiling point than salt.
In the round bottom flask – boiling/evaporation takes place.
In the Liebig condenser – condensation takes place.
MUST KNOW!!! cuz this is ez marks
What is the role of the thermometer?
Measure the temperature of the vapour before it enters the Liebig condenser.
Gives the boiling point of the substance that’s a vapour.
