18/04/2024 The ROCK Cycle Flashcards
How many years will rocks be converted from one type to another?
Rocks can be converted from one type to another over millions of years
What processes do the rocks need to change type and what speed does this occur?
The processes rocks need to change type are weathering and erosion this usually happens very slowly
What process occurs at the top of the mountain in the Rock Cycle?
Weathering
What process occurs after weathering in the Rock Cycle?
Transport/Transportation occurs
What happens to the sediments that have made their way to the lake from the mountain?
Deposit/Deposition occurs
What happens to sediments after they have been deposited along the river banks.
Compaction squeezing sediments
together, while cementation involves the binding of these compacted sediments by minerals
How are sedimentary rocks formed?
Binding of compacted sediments by minerals, forming sedimentary rocks
What other course/route could the sedimentary rocks take?
Another course/route the sedimentary rocks take is melting into magma
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
Metamorphic rocks are formed from heating and pressure
What other course/route could the metamorphic rocks take?
Melting and freezing then cooling forming an igneous rock
How are igneous rocks formed?
Igneous rocks are formed from heating and pressure
What other course/route could the Igneous rocks take?
Lava cooling and freezing forming an igneous rock
What happens at the end of the rock cycle?
Uplift, Rock layers are pushed upward, often due to tectonic forces, resulting in the exposure of previously buried rocks at the Earth’s surface.
What is constantly being worn away by erosion and weathering?
Rocks
However what breeds because of rocks being worn away by erosion and weathering?
New rocks are being produced by melting and high temperature and pressure
What is erosion?
The breakdown and transportation of rocks by natural forces
What natural forces can cause erosion?
Wind, moving water, change in temperature
What is weathering?
The breakdown of rocks in situ (one place)
What are the three types of weathering that can occur?
Physical, Chemical ,Biological
What happens during physical weathering - freeze thaw?
Water enters a crack temperature will become cooler freezing the water in the crack causing the crack to expand finally after freeze thawing occurs many times the rock will break off
What happens during physical weathering - wind?
The wind can blow tiny grains of said against a rock this causes them to wear away by friction
What happens during physical weathering - rain and waves?
Rain and waves lashing against a rock can cause it to wear away
