Mixtures + Solutions (summer exam) Flashcards
Mixtures
A mixture:
Contains two or more different elements or compounds that are not chemically bonded.
Can be easily separated using physical methods (learn later).
JUST KNOW!!! :)
Solutions
Key definitions:
Soluble means it WILL dissolve. Examples of soluble substances include salt and sugar.
JUST KNOW!!!!!
Solutions Insoluble means it will NOT dissolve. Examples of insoluble substances include mud and sand.
JUST KNOW!!!!!
Solutions Sugar and salt are examples of solutes. A solute is a solid that is being dissolved.
JUST KNOW!!!!!
Solutions Water is an example of a solvent. A solvent is a liquid a solute can be dissolved into.
JUST KNOW
Solutions A solution is a mixture of a solute and a solvent
JUSTT NOW!!!!!!!!
MAKE SURE YOU LOOK AT THE SLIDES FOR A MUCH BETTER UNDERSTANDING IDC NO MATTER WHAT YOU THINK OK?
ok sire
The mass of the solute and solvent is equal to the mass of solution as based on the law of conservation of mass.
KINDA MUST KNOW
The three factors affecting dissolving are:
Surface area (powders dissolving faster than chunks)
Temperature (higher temperature leads to faster dissolving)
Amount of stirring (more stirring leads to faster dissolving)
KInda must know
Mixtures can be separated by physical methods.
The physical method that is used depends upon the type of mixture.
The different methods include:
Filtration
Evaporation
Simple distillation
Chromatography
