Q

Upper Epidermis

A

A thin, single layer of cells located at the top of the leaf, directly beneath the cuticle. Transparent layer that allows light to pass through.

Q

Palisade Mesophyll

A

A layer of elongated, closely packed cells found below the upper epidermis. It is elongated to increase surface area for maximum light absorption. It has lots of chloroplasts to absorb light.

Q

Spongy Mesophyll

A

A layer of loosely arranged, round cells with many air spaces, located below the palisade mesophyll. It has lots of air spaces for the diffusion of gases.

Q

Vascular Tissue

A

A bundle of tube-like structures (xylem and phloem) often found in the center of the leaf sections ->** (xylem + phloem).

Q

Xylem

A

Part of the vascular tissue, usually larger tubes towards the top of the bundle. It transports water.

Q

Phloem

A

Part of the vascular tissue, usually smaller tubes located below the xylem in the bundle. It transports food substances e.g. sucrose.
