Chromatography (summer exam) Flashcards
Chromatography is used to separate mixtures of soluble substances. Simplified Chromatography separates soluble (will dissolve) mixtures. (made up of two different elements that are not chemically bonded)
MUST KNOW !!
Mixtures that are suitable for separation by chromatography include:
inks, dyes and colours in foods.
KINDA MUST KNOW !!
LOOK AT THE ACTUAL REVISION SLIDES!! (real) till How does this technique work?
Yes boyo
The solvent moves through the paper, carrying the different substances within the mixture.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
The substance that moves least up the chromatogram is the least soluble.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
The different substances within the mixture have different solubilities.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
As the solvent travels up the chromatography paper, the substances travel different distances depending on their solubility.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
The more soluble the substance, the further it travels.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
Analysing chromatograms
One spot in a vertical line – substance is pure/made from only one colour
YOU KNOW THIS !!
More than one spot in a vertical line – substance is a mixture/contains a certain number of colours.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
If spots match horizontally on a chromatogram both substance, contain the same substance.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
If spots do not match horizontally on a chromatogram, they contain an unknown substance.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
Sample does not move from start line – the sample is insoluble in the solvent. Solvent needs to change.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
The substance that moves furthest up the chromatogram is the most soluble.
YOU KNOW THIS !!
The substance that moves least up the chromatogram is the least soluble.
