What should Irregularly displayed (Defective) Signals always be regarded as?
At the safest position (STOP)

- Defective equipment (signals,points)
- Congestion

- Ahead of timetable

What is the process for a driver if detained at a Fixed Signal?
- Sound a long whistle
- Contact the Signaller/Area Controller/Train Controller using:
- DTRS
- Work Mobile Phone
- Signal Post Telephone
- Physically at Signal Box - Provide them with:
- Train Number
- Signal Post Number
- Position of Train - Signaller will provide driver with:
- Reason for Delay
- Duration of Delay
- Blocking Facilities if applicable
(Contact Train Controller if you can’t reach Signaller) - PA Announcement
- Train Controller must be informed if Driver isn’t satisfied with reason for delay
What are identified as Signal Irregularities?
- The absence of a Signal Aspect at a place it is normally shown
- A signal imperfectly displayed
- A signal that is flickering
- A disc signal not turned correctly
- A white light where there should be a coloured light
- Where there are 2 signal aspects where there should only be 1
- Conflicting Co-Acting aspects
- Signal reverting to STOP prior to the train passing the signal
- Any other displaying aspects not in the 1994 Book of Rules
- Cycling through different signal aspects
How should drivers treat all imperfectly displayed signals?
As a STOP aspect
Why may signals that are operated by mechanical means potentially display halfway position?
Extreme weather conditions
What to do at Home, Disc and Dwarf Signals which have irregularities?
- Attempt to stop prior
- Advise Controlling Signaller of circumstances (including signal number and fault)
- Receive the correct Authority to pass the defective signal
What to do at Automatic Signals which have irregularities?
- Attempt to stop prior
- Advise Train Control of circumstances (including signal number and fault)
- Rule 1 Section 3
Is a CAN Notice an authority to pass a signal at Stop?
No
What should a driver do if a Home Signal is Defective at the Proceed Position?
- Obtain correct authority to pass defective signal from Controlling Signaller
- Proceed with Extreme Caution to the next Fixed Signal
- Make PA Annocement

- Obscure the light of the signal
- Place 2 ATW’s 10 metres apart at a sufficient distance before the signal
- Hold RED hand signal to stop any train
- Inform driver of circumstances
