Pneumatic Fundmentals Flashcards
What do Air Compressors do?
Pressurise the air to the required system pressure (supply the air to the Reservoir)
What do all Electric Multiple Units (EMU) have?
- Air Compressors
- Reservoirs
What do Compressor Governors do?
- Turn compressors on and off
- Monitor the main Reservoir
What do Reservoirs do?
Store all of the pressurised Air
What do Safety Relief Valves do?
Are fitted to every Main Reservoir and stop the Main Reservoir from Overcharging
What do Air Dryers do?
Remove Dirt, Oil and Water from the Reservoir
What train equipment and systems employ Pneumatic requirements?
- Friction braking systems
- Air Suspension systems (Comeng, Siemens, HCMT)
- Sanding equipment (Siemens, HCMT)
- Whistles
- Pantograph raising (Comeng, HCMT)
- Saloon doors opening and closing (Comeng)
- Spring Park Brake systems
What do Isolating Cocks do?
Turn equipment on and off, or redirect compressed air into different pathways
What is an Auxiliary Reservoir?
The secondary Reservoir that is fed by the Main Reservoir
What is the Whistles 2 main purposes?
- Warning device
- Communication between drivers
Do all Metro trains EMU’s have Pneumatic Whistles?
Yes
How does a Comeng raise its Pantograph?
With compressed air (Pneumatic)
Where is the initial supply of compressed air required to raise the Pantograph obtained from?
- Main Reservoir
- Storage Reservoir
- Battery operated Compressor
Which trains saloon doors are opened by Pneumatic systems?
Comeng
Which trains saloon doors are opened by Electric Motor?
- X’Trapolis
- Siemens
- HCMT
