What does the term SET BACK mean?
The procedure performed when the train needs to be driven back in the direction it came from
What does the term PROPELLING mean?
Propelling/Pushing relates to the driving and braking from any cab EXCEPT the leading cab
When can SET BACK moves be performed?
- Planned Zig-Zag shunting movements
- To avoid an Obstruction
- Due to an Accident
- Due to a train being Wrong Routed
- Any other dangerous situation
Trains may be required to be driven from the non-leading cab when?
- The leading cab or driving controls become defective
- Authorised shunting movements/Zig-Zag movements
What allows Cab to Cab communication to be performed?
When 2 units are Electronically Coupled
What are the 3 main ways to communicate between the driver and a competent worker in a Comeng?
- 110 volts DC bell system
- DTRS Motor Car Number call
- Whistle codes
What are the Bell Codes?
1 Bell - Call Attention
2 Bells - Proceed
3 Bells - Set Back

Who’s permission must be obtained for SET BACK movements in the Metrol Controlled Area?
Verbal authority from the Controlling Signaller
(Must be supervised by Senior Network Controller at Metrol)
What must the Area Controller do before a RETURNING TO THE REAR movement is done in the MURL?
Prevent any train from entering the MURL that is travelling towards the authorised train
What is a TRACK BLOCK COMMAND?
Specifying each Intermediate Home Signal number between the location and Home Signal which the train will return to on the Train Authority.
When RETURNING TO THE REAR in the MURL, what must the driver do at Intermediate Home Signals?
- STOP at every Intermediate Home Signal
- Ensure the number of the Intermediate Home Signal is on the Train Authority
- Cut out/raise the Leading Trip
- Travel at 15km/h
When RETURNING TO THE REAR in the MURL, what must the driver do at the exit?
- STOP at the Home Signal at the exit of the MURL
- Contact the Area Controller
- CUT IN THE LEADING TRIP VALVE before proceeding on the aspect of the signal
If there is MORE THAN ONE TRAIN TO RETURN in the MURL what must be done?
Only 1 train can perform the procedure at once
