When can an infection of a baby be contracted?
- Antenatally
- Perinatally
- Postnatally
What is the most common bacterial infection?
Group B Streptococcus
4 Viral infections affecting neonates
- Cytomegalovirus
- Parvovirus
- Herpes virus
- Enterovirus
What is hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy
Multi organ damage due to tissue hypoxia. Brain damage is most common due to lack of oxygen.
What Respiratory problems are associated with Pregnancy/Delivery?
- transient tachypnoea of the newborn
- pneumothorax
What cardiac problems are associated with pregnancy/delivery?
- Hydrops foetal is (Heart failure in utero)
- Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the Newborn
- Congenital problems = tetralogy of fallout, coarctation of the aorta, hypo plastic heart.
What can Rhesus disease and chromosomal problems cause?
Hydros Foetalis (Heart failure in the womb)
What are Respiratory disorders caused by Congenital anomalies?
- Tracheo-oseophageal fistula
- Diaphragmatic Hernia
What are Neurological disorders caused by Congenital anomalies
- Spina bifida
- microcephaly
What are Renal disorders caused by Congenital anomalies
- Potters syndrome
What is potters syndrome?
Describes babies with renal genesis. They do not produce urine properly so lung development is affected. Can cause pulmonary hypoplasia.
What are Muscular disorders caused by Congenital anomalies
Myotonic dystrophy
What is myotonic dystrophy
A genetic condition affecting muscle function. Babies are floppy and require respiratory support.
