What is the daily recommended intake of Vitamin A? Give examples of dietary sources and what it helps with.
RNI = 350-400 ug/day
Cheese, eggs and yoghurt. Helps vision, strengthens immune system and maintains healthy skin
What is the daily recommended intake of Vitamin C? Give examples of dietary sources and what it helps with.
RNI = 25-30 mg/day
Oranges, strawberries and broccoli.
Helps body absorb iron.
What is the daily recommended intake of Vitamin D? Give examples of dietary sources and what it helps with.
RNI = 7-8.5 ug/day
Main source is sunlight but also small amount in oily fish and eggs
Helps regulate calcium and phosphate levels in the body.
Should children 6 months who consume less than 500mls/day of infant milk be given vitamin A, C and D supplements?
Yes
What vitamin should breastfed babies around 2 weeks be given?
Vitamin D supplements
Should supplements be given to babies receiving >500mls/day?
No - as formula milk is fortified with vitamin D and other nutrients.
What is the recommended feeding type for babies <6 months?
Exclusively breastfeeding
What is complementary feeding?
Also known as weaning - it is the process of slowly introducing food to increase the variety of new flavours and textures into the baby’s diet.
What is involved in these Public Health Nutrition Interventions:
- Healthy Start
- Childsmile
- Child Healthy Weight
Healthy start = improves the health of low income pregnant women. Gives them vouchers to spend on basic fruit and veg and infant formula milk.
Childsmile = improves dental hygiene of children
Child healthy weight = supports children, young adults and families to manage their weights
