Definition
Insufficient intestine to provide for the nutritional + fluid needs of pt
- Inadequate length
- inadequate function
- poor blood flow
Cause
Not always crohn’s

10-15% pts undergoing intestinal surgery

Treatment aims (4)
Reduce intestinal losses
Control diarrhoea
Maintain fluid + electrolyte balance
Treat + prevent medical complications
Nutrition route
PN -> EN -> bolus -> oral intake
-> oral + EN -> oral/supplement
Or -> home TPN -> transplant
Nutrition route:
Prolonged GI failure
PN is mandatory + lifesaving (esp early stages)
Nutrition route:
If jejunum <100cm
Fluid + electrolytes by PN
Nutrition route:
If jejunum <75cm or <50cm with functioning colon
Nutrition, fluid + electrolytes by PN
Dietary treatment
PN
Frequent meals Increased energy intake B12 supplementation Other micronutrient deficiencies Avoid oxalate - coffee, rhubarb, spinach, tomatoes, chocolate
