Q

What is transverse thrust?

A

Where a fixed pitch propeller has the tendency to bring the stern in the direction of the turn of the propeller.

Eg a left hand prop will bring the stern to port going ahead and cant the bow to starboard

Q

Relationship between Speed through Water (STW) and rudder efficiency?

A

More STW = more water flow over rudder therefore better efficient

However, low STW and a strong adverse current may also be effective

Q

Turning short round RHFP

A
  1. Start on port side of channel or seaway
  2. Rudder hard to stand
  3. Kick full ahead (to limit headway)
  4. Rudder midships
  5. Engines astern
  6. Commencing sternway, bow will cant to stbd, Stern to port. Stop engines.
  7. Rudder stbd, engines ahead
