Q

Charterer wants to know how much cargo you can load

A

Check deadweight scale (per tank cap plan)
Ascertain ports of loading and discharge
Assess stores (Food, fuel, fw) required for voyage including reserves
Water densities in ports of load and discharge (allowable sinkage)
Determine stowage factor of cargo
Subtract stores from permissible DWT
Compare Stowage Factor to Hold Capacity (polystyrene balls)
If possible, run a test on loadicator to ascertain Max SF/BM

48
Loadlines - Assignment of Freeboard
Tabulated Freeboard in Loadline Convention, with adjustments made based on certain items such as hatches, vents, etc.
49
If you have a vent with a direct connection to the main machinery spaces, which is listed on the Conditions of Assignment, what happens if you (or someone else) finds it in poor condition?
When assigning a freeboard, the Conditions of Assignment are items listed and accounted for in the adjustment of the tabulated freeboard in the LL Convention. Therefore, if this vent is in poor condition, the assigned freeboard is no longer valid, the Load Line certificate is null and void and the vessel is no longer seaworthy. Therefore, the ship can't sail.
