Safe Water Mark
Retroreflective tape as per Standard Code
What is the difference between the IALA Standard and Comprehensive Codes?
The Comprehensive Code provides more rigorous instruction on the marking and identification of unlit navigational buoys and is best exemplified by Scandinavian Countries where waterways not fit for commercial traffic are routinely used by private or leisure users
You are heading North and see this ahead of you.
Give as much information as you can and tell me your actions
North Cardinal Mark
Topmark: Two cones apexes up
Shape: Pillar or Spar
Light: White, Q (50-79fpm, usually 50-60) or VQ (80-159fpm, usually 100-120)
RetroTape:
Standard: One or more white bands, letters, numerals or symbols
Comprehensive: Blue band on black part, yellow band on yellow part. Blue band is twice the thickness of the yellow.
I am heading North towards a North cardinal; I would immediately take all way off as I am in the “danger zone.” Verify my position, navigational assessment, establish the nature of the hazard and call the Master.
Heading South, this is dead ahead.
ID, info and actions.
West Cardinal Mark
Topmark; two cones apexes together (W for Wineglass)
Shape; pillar or spar
Light; white, Q(9) 15s or VQ(9) 10s
Retrotape:
Standard: One or more white bands, letters, numerals or symbols
Comprehensive: Two yellow bands on upper yellow part only.
Heading South, I would alter course to starboard to leave this on my port side, as the clear water lies to the West of the mark.
