- AIDS (immoral and unnatural behaviour was to blame)

Gerbner et al - heterosexual portrayal of homosexuality
tv networks shy away from portraying gays and lesbians for fear of alienating or offending advertisers, investors & audiences = need profits so need to appeal to largest audience possible
e.g. in Will and Grace two gay characters are friends not lovers
Gill - heterosexual portrayal of homosexuality
constructed with heterosexual audience in mind so represent little challenge to existing patriarchal and heterosexual structures of gender and sexuality
e.g. gay men rarely touch / women kissing = appeals to heterosexual male fantasy
reasons for increase in ad representations
- growing acceptance
- attempt to access an untapped economy (pink pound)
- please heterosexual audience (lesbian women for men)
