control theory T7 Flashcards
key assumptions
accept OCS = aim to explain why young, black, w/c males from urban areas commit crime
Hirschi’s social bonds that pull people away from crime and towards conformity
- commitment
- attachment
- belief
- involvement
commitment
people committed to conventional activities and do not wish to jeopardise
e.g. working, raising family
attachment
people attached to those around them and sensitive to their needs & wishes
belief
share moral beliefs e.g. respect for others & obedience
involvement
kept busy with involvement in clubs, teams etc = no time for crime
Hirschi opportunity theory
inadequate self-control arising from weak social bonds is not enough to explain crime- opportunities must be present
prevent crime by encouraging family, community, socialisation to promote conformity
positive evaluation of Hirschi
recognises importance of socialisation and social control in maintaining cohesive society
negative evaluation of Hirschi
- doesn’t explain why those who have weaker bonds don’t commit
- doesn’t recognise those with strong bonds do commit (white collar crime)
