Sensory receptors Flashcards
Prorioceptor
Mechanoreceptor of joints and muscle
Nociceptor
pain and do not adapt
Adequate stimulus
Activates stretch sensitive ion channels
Adaption
Mechanoreceptors can adapt to maintained stimulus and only signal change - onset of stimulation
Pacinian corpuscle
Rapidly adapting
Myelinated with naked nerve ending enclosed by connective tissue
Deformed capsule
Open stretch sensitive channels
Sodium influx => depolarisation => AP
Essential non neural structure
Receptive fields
Activate somatic sensory neuron by stimulus in specific area
Large = less sensitive eg back and limbs
Sensitive are lips and fingertips
Acuity
Ability to locate stimulus on skin and differentiate from one close by
Lateral inhibition
Information at edge of stimulus inhibited compared to centre to clean up information and allow a precise location
Proprioceptors
Mechanoreceptors signalling body position
Muscle spindles
Monitor muscle length
Golgi tendons
Monitor tension on tendons
Joint receptor
Monitor joint angle
Intrafusal fibres
Form muscle spindles and muscle fibres lie parallel
Gamma motor
Intrafusal - contraction at both ends
